Nicklas Lidstrom

On May 31, 2012, one of the greatest NHL defenceman decided to hang up his skates.

20 seasons in the league, all of which were spent with the Detroit Red Wings.

Four Stanley Cups, Seven Norris Trophies, One Conn Smythe Trophy, One Olympic Gold and Twelve All-Star game appearances.

In his 20 seasons in the NHL, he never missed a single post-season.

1,142 points in 1,564 games with a modest +450 ranking.

Sports Illustrated and Sporting News named him “NHL Player of the Decade”

  1. This is definitely a big blow to the Detroit Red Wings. They finally lose their number 1 defenceman who still would have been their number 1 guy next year. It’s a big hole to fill and, although they’ll probably make the playoffs next season, their chances are definitely diminished without one of the game’s all-time greats. It will definitely be interesting to see how Ken Holland responds this off-season and if he does anything to try and negate this effect.
