Monday Blues & Beats Vol. 3

Sorry for the tardiness, Boxing Day pre-occupied much of my day, not too mention wings + beer post sales. But here we are, some features off The Weeknd’s trilogy finale, Jeezy’s TM:103 and the beautiful Lana Del Rey’s latest single. Enjoy.

Bei Major – Trouble (Remix) [feat. J. Cole, Wale, Trey Songz & T-Pain]

Young Jeezy – OJ (feat. Fabolous & Jadakiss)

The XX – Open Eyes (Demo)

The Weeknd – D.D.

Lana Del Rey – Off To The Races

Nicki Minaj – Stupid Hoe

Young Jeezy – Leave You Alone

HBO: 24/7 Flyers/Rangers: Road to the NHL Winter Classic Episode 2

The first instalment was exactly how I imagined it, in depth, well produced and engaging beyond belief. HBO gives us the perfect inside look to the hockey world. Every camera angle, every song, every sound effect, and every cursed word was taken into consideration when putting this show together. We were given the introduction to each team, Bryzgalov’s thoughts on the universe, Avery’s free time spent modelling and a nice sentimental touch with meeting Callahan’s grandmother. Let’s see what last week had in store.

Record Sales: Week 51  12/13/11 – 12/19/11

Drake’s sophomore LP Take Care goes platinum this week. Bublé still taking advantage of the season, as is the teenage heartthrob JB. Black Keys with a solid second week, and Adele’s 2008 release 19 re-enters the top 25 with an impressive 44k copies sold.

Can Common’s The Dreamer/The Believer out-sell the holiday spirit? Check back next week.

HBO: 24/7 Flyers/Rangers: Road to the NHL Winter Classic Episode 1

It’s back! Following the tremendous success of last year’s Road to the Winter Classic, HBO’s 24/7 features the Philadelphia Flyers and the New York Rangers. A 4 part series (one hour each) trailing two hockey clubs leading up to the Winter Classic. This is a peak inside the world of NHL players and the life surrounding them. Uncut, emotional, blunt and hard-hitting are just a few descriptive words that come to mind (and i’m not just talking about Torts). Enjoy.

Stay tuned for Episode 2

Record Sales: Week 50   12/06/11 – 12/13/11

Even though Bublé Christmas record is still on the rise, it was nice to see the classic Charlie Brown Christmas come in at #25. The Black Keys came in strong at #2, and the phenomenal concept album from The Roots at #15 with nearly 50K.

Can Take Care go platinum next week? How will Common and Young Jeezy’s new records fair?

Monday Blues & Beats Vol. 1

It’s nearly impossible to stay completely up-to-date with music these days. The outlets are endless; blogs, iTunes, Soundcloud, Twitter, and you might even pick up a physical CD (RIP HMV Vancouver). Who has the time to sort through all the garbage out there? I do my best. So perhaps this section of the blog will be the go-to starting point for your weekly search.

The Monday Blues & Beats will appear weekly (on Monday if you hadn’t guessed), summarizing the previous week’s releases, or older if I feel it belongs. I always look forward to suggestions, so if my genre-spread isn’t diverse enough, holler.

The National – Rylan

The National – I Need My Girl

(Listen Only – They debuted these two new tracks on Canadian Public Radio on Dec. 7th)

Lupe Fiasco – American Terrorist III

Miike Snow – Devil’s Work

Avicii - Levels (Skrillex Remix)

The Black Keys – Money Maker

The Roots – One Time (feat. Phonte & Dice Raw)

Pusha T – Ooh (feat. Hodgy Beats, Liva Don & Tyler, The Creator)

Lupe Fiasco – The End Of The World

Over two weeks old, but the M83 instrumental meeting Lupe’s flow is hard to pass up.

The Roots - Redford (For Yia-Yia & Pappou)

Produced by Sufjan Stevens, a beautiful instrumental reminiscent of Cinematic Orchestra. Diversity at it’s finest.

Record Sales: Week 49   11/29/11 – 12/05/11

Tuesday: Perhaps you look forward to getting over the Monday Blues, or maybe you’re juiced for New Release Day, for myself, the aforementioned are on my mind, not to mention last week’s record sales.

Adele’s 21 has been virtually unstoppable, seems like there’s 150,000 stocking stuffers on their way. The Young Money Toronto boy is nearing Platinum, Coldplay is showing an impressive 50k and Trey Songz’s EP comes in at #24. Tis the season full of Christmas records, pretty boy Buble’s incredibly successful original title, Bieber’s Mistletoe, Glee’s compilation, and approaching Gold status, She & Him’s indie Christmas music.

Stay tuned for next weeks numbers to see if The Black Keys can follow up the success of Brothers, or will T-Pain’s comeback album steal the show. Perhaps Robin Thicke’s Love After War will serenade it’s way to the top, and The Root’s concept album hopes not to be Undun.
